Gas powered airsoft pistols are either powered by CO2 cartriges or green gas. CO2 cartriges come pre packaged and are inserted into the magazine of the gun. Once the cartrige is in place the gun is ready to shoot. Green gas comes in bottles and is injected into the magazine. The magazine holds the gas, there is no special cartrige. This is an advantage over CO2 because you can pre-load several magazines with green gas, and when it comes time to re-load you know that you will have enough gas to be able to use the gun.

Some gas guns have a blow back features. This means that when the gun is fired the slide shoots back, just like a real magazine fed pistol. The slide shooting back makes it more realistic, like the kick that you get when you fire a real pistol. Usually the blow back feature is only available on green gas guns. CO2 guns are usually do not have a blow back feature.
